Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

Bosch's cordless high-torque impact wrench has been in need of an overhaul for a while and they really nailed with the ProFactor GDS18V-770. Even though there are stronger models available from a couple of other brands, this impact wrench is capable of replacing your corded or pneumatic 3/4-inch impact without looking back.

Professional industrial mechanics know the frustration of encountering seized-up nuts and bolts, especially when there’s just no room for a breaker bar. The Bosch ProFactor 3/4-Inch cordless high-torque impact wrench is one of several heavy hitters on the enhanced Bosch ProFactor lineup aiming to tackle tough jobs when it matters most.

The Bosch ProFactor line of cordless impact wrenches currently includes 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch models. We got our hands on the stronger 3/4-inch version (GDS18V-770N) for this review.

The two models are pretty close and both impressive thanks to Bosch’s BiTurbo brushless motor. This model showcases a slight bump in torque. It provides up to 770 ft.-lbs. of fastening torque and 1,250 ft.-lbs. of max breakaway torque. Both models have three speeds that top out at 1750 RPM.

We took the Bosch GDS18V-770 out into our shop to find out how this impact wrench compares to what we’ve tested in the past. On our test rig, we tightened a few 1-1/2 inch Grade 8 nuts to 700 ft-lbs with our Gearwrench electronic torque wrench. The Bosch ProFactor high-torque impact wrench broke them loose in a matter of seconds. What it didn’t break was a sweat.

We know that this model is capable of more and we’re teaming up with one of our local marine mechanics to see if he can do a bit less torch work on boats and trailers that have seen less than ideal care following saltwater trips. Check back to see his thoughts in a few weeks.

Depending on what you’re upgrading from, this 3/4-inch impact wrench may seem a little on the heavy side. It weighs 6.5 pounds bare and 8.6 pounds with the 8.0Ah Profactor battery. The weight isn’t overwhelming by any means, and it’s actually in line with other cordless 3/4-inch wrenches designed for heavy-duty use.

The profile is very similar to other high-torque impact wrenches standing 9.5 inches tall and 8.7 inches in length.

As far as balance and feel, there’s really nothing to complain about. The grip is pretty stout and the textured rubber overmold helps you keep a secure grip despite sweat and grease. Bosch also added a rubber head casing to help protect the tool and whatever you’re working on.

Since the Bosch GDS18V-770 torque wrench is intended for high-demand jobs, the anvil is fitted with both a friction ring as well as a through-hole. The through-hole, combined with a retainer pin and o-ring, provides an extra layer of strength and helps prevent damage to the socket.

Bosch shifts slightly away from traditional norms with their control panel. You can easily toggle between the three speed settings and that control is offset. On the opposite side, you have a button to control whether to use the LED light. If you don’t need the light, you can simply turn it off and retain a little more juice in the battery.

Bosch’s entire ProFactor series is part of their 18V line and the tools work with any Bosch 18V batteries. However, you need to go with one of the advanced Core18V packs to get the best performance. If you’re trying to shave some weight, the 4.0Ah Core18V battery works, but the real workhorse for this tool is the 8.0Ah.

The Bosch 18V 3/4-inch impact wrench is available for $249.00 as a bare tool. At the moment, there’s no kit option available. If the 1/2-inch drive is what you need, it’s the same price.
