It’s 2022 and Beavis and Butt-Head are back on the airwaves. They might not be on MTV anymore, but their new home, Paramount+ offers up plenty in regards to content. The whole point and value of Beavis and Butt-Head is still the same. The movie, Beavis and Butt-Head: Do The Universe offered up why the two have come from 1998 to 2022, now they’re here, they can comment on all the stupid things that make our society what it is. The things that were funny in 1998 about the duo are still here and don’t worry, they still comment on music videos, they’ve just added some new things to their arsenal. The first two episodes of the new show Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head offer up some vintage feeling moments that show even after all those years away, the two eternal 15-year-olds are hilarious.

The first episode has two segments “The Special One” and “Escape Room”. I got to see “The Special One” at their San Diego Comic-Con panel a couple of weeks ago, and it’s still just as funny. It only involves Beavis, which is an interesting way to go with the very first returning segment, but it’s absolutely hilarious. Beavis talks to a dumpster fire and the fire has him do menial tasks that involve bettering himself. It upends whatever expectations you have for a talking dumpster fire and leads to a great conclusion. It was a fantastic way to start off the new series with something that’s unexpected.

As for “Escape Room”, if escape rooms existed in 1998, this would have fit right in with Beavis and Butt-Head then. The episode starts off with Beavis and Butt-Head tossing milk cartons in the street for cars to run over and continues with them mistaking a bathroom for the escape room. All throughout, the dream of “scoring” with the two girls that are doing the escape room with them brings them forward. It’s nice to see that the priorities for Beavis and Butt-Head haven’t changed at all.

Like the first episode, episode two follows even more down that path of “classic” Beavis and Butt-Head. “Boxed In” sees Beavis and Butt-Head getting stuck in a box of textbooks looking for Beavis’s power drill. Sticking Beavis and Butt-Head into a box of textbooks is funny enough, but the fact that they get crammed into a box and almost suffocate is even funnier. It’s a classic example of the humor on display from the show where they never verge into overly vulgar stuff, but it remains as funny as ever.

“Beekeepers” sees Beavis and Butt-Head try to cash in on the farmer’s market/health food crazy and sell honey. Except they find that honey is from a wasps nest and not a bee’s nest. They also learn that wasps don’t actually make honey. The ending of the episode is pure hilarity, and I won’t spoil it here. But it’s safe to say that Beavis and Butt-Head haven’t missed a beat.

For fans of the classic series that are apprehensive of a modern “reboot”, don’t be. This is about as close as it’ll get to just getting Beavis and Butt-Head from 1998 into 2022. After all, that’s the plot of the movie that led us here. The boys are back for a new series, and it’s like they’ve never been gone.
