Scientists say that  and risk continued spillovers of the virus into humans unlike the campaigns to stop COVID-19, mass vaccination won’t be necessary to curb monkeypox outbreaks. They think targeted vaccination, along with other measures, could be enough to shut down the multiple outbreaks. Monkeypox is much harder to spread than the coronavirus. But experts warn that if the disease spills over into general populations, the need for vaccines could intensify, especially if it becomes entrenched in new regions.

Sunday's game is the second meeting this season between the two teams. The Mercury won the previous matchup 84-81. New York is 5-9 at home, and Phoenix is 4-11 on the road.

San Francisco, which snapped a seven-game skid Thursday night, has dropped eight of nine.

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants’ are back to their losing ways after the Chicago Cubs handed them a 4-2 loss on Friday night at Oracle Park.

Jorge Alfaro launched a three-run homer, Luke Voit and All-Star Manny Machado each hit a two-run shot and the San Diego Padres enjoyed their first five-homer game in more than a year to beat the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins 10-1. Kim Ha-seong and Eric Hosmer added solo shots for the Padres, who gave left-hander Blake Snell (3-5) all the runs he needed in the first inning. All-Star Byron Buxton homered for the Twins in the fourth, his 25th. Right-hander Joe Ryan yielded all five Padres homers, including Machado’s and Alfaro’s in a six-run fifth, when all the runs scored with two outs.

Kwadwo Opoku and Carlos Vela scored in the first half, and Los Angeles FC beat the Seattle Sounders 2-1 Friday night in the home debuts of European superstars Giorgio Chiellini and Gareth Bale. Chiellini started and played 71 minutes at Banc of California Stadium, while Bale came on as a substitute in the 63rd minute of both players’ third match with their new club. Major League Soccer-leading LAFC earned its season-best fourth consecutive victory and moved seven points clear of Austin atop the Western Conference during its longest winning streak since 2019.

Martin Perez worked seven strong innings, Adolis Garcia, Ezequiel Duran and Jonah Heim had RBI doubles and the Texas Rangers broke open a close game in the ninth inning and won consecutive games for the second time this month, beating the Los Angeles Angels 7-2. Luis Rengifo had an RBI single for the Angels, who have nine total hits and two runs in the first two games of a four-game series.  Shohei Ohtani went 0 for 4, one night after he pitched six innings while giving up two runs. The Angels lost for the eighth time in 11 games.

Will Smith and Trayce Thompson each hit a two-run homer, Julio Urías pitched seven strong innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers continued their torrid July with a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The Dodgers overcame 13 runners left on base and a shaky ninth inning by Craig Kimbrel to improve to 20-4 this month and 67-32 overall, both the best marks in the majors. Smith added a single and reached base four times, while Urías used a fastball-changeup-curveball mix to hold the Rockies to two runs and four hits. Chad Kuhl, who threw a three-hit shutout the last time he faced the Dodgers on June 27, gave up both home runs in Colorado's seventh loss in nine games.

Inmates are helping round out job market in a north Alabama community. The head of Morgan County Community Corrections and Court Services says fast food and other restaurants, construction companies, and manufacturing plants are the top employers using work-release inmates in the county. A Wayne Farms spokesman says the poultry company has about 10 trusted prisoners on its local payroll. The state unemployment rate fell to an all-time low of 2.6% in June, and some companies are having a hard time finding workers.

Grant Enfinger grabbed the lead with four fresh tires after a wild overtime restart and pulled away to win the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoff opener Friday night at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Restarting second on the inside row, Enfinger squeezed the No. 23 GMS Racing Chevrolet past Zane Smith for the lead after Smith battled with John Hunter Nemechek for the top spot. Enfinger raced to his seventh series victory and first since 2020. He secured a place in the Round of 8 with the victory. Ben Rhodes ended up second in a Toyota, 0.477 seconds back on the 0.686-mile oval that hosted the series for the first time since 2011.

Seth Brown hit two solo homers, Stephen Piscotty hit a three-run shot, and James Kapriellian pitched six strong innings as the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 7-3 for their season-high fourth straight win. Elvis Andrus also homered for Oakland, which improved to 7-2 since the All-Star break. Kaprielian (2-5) allowed one earned run and four hits, striking out four and walking one. Lance Lynn (1-4) went 5 2/3 innings and allowed five runs and six hits. He struck out eight and walked none.

A wildfire burning in western Montana has spread to 2,000 acres, forcing evacuations and road closures. Montana Right Now reported the fire broke out Friday near the town of Elmo near Flathead Lake. CSKT Fire Officer C.T. Camel told the station that three dozen homes near Elmo were being evacuated. A report from the Montana Department of Transportation said there was zero viability in the area and Highway 28 between Hot Springs and Elmo was closed.

The Seattle Mariners have acquired the top starting pitcher on the trade market, getting All-Star Luis Castillo from the payroll-paring Cincinnati Reds for four minor league prospects. Cincinnati obtained infielders Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo, and right-handers Levi Stoudt and Andrew Moore. Marte was the Mariners’ top-rated prospect, Arroyo was third and Stoudt fifth. Seattle has not been to the playoffs since 2001, the longest postseason drought in the four major North American pro sports.

In one of this year’s most competitive U.S. Senate races, the biggest moments aren't playing out on the campaign trail. They’re on social media. In one stunt, Democrat John Fetterman is trying to get his Republican rival enshrined in New Jersey's Hall of Fame. It's a nod to Dr. Mehmet Oz moving from New Jersey to run. Fetterman also has New Jersey icons recording videos telling Oz to come home. The stunts are cheap and potentially potent ways for Fetterman to define Oz. Republicans acknowledge that Fetterman’s social-media game is top-notch. But they say many voters don’t see the material and it's missing issues like inflation that voters consider when casting ballots.
